A wise woman recently said this to me in a magnificent conversation we had: "When you honestly, completely deal with your own shit, it forces people around you to deal with you differently, and, sometimes, it forces them to deal with their own shit." (I know I slightly paraphrased, R! ;P) This woman is a friend, my Homeopathic Physician and someone I appreciate and look up to a great deal. And I adore that we sit in her office every month during my "therapy sessions" and say 'shit' and 'fuck' and still manage to cover more emotional, mental and historical ground than I ever could have on my own. She helped me guide myself out of the darkness I was in last summer (2012). I had hit a wall in my healing process, my body was exhausted, my mind completely spent and my emotions - well, I believe they had broken the thread they were hanging by. I was completely overwhelmed, and suddenly found myself spiraling into suicidal thoughts, a familiar pattern for me, but surprising nonetheless as I felt I had come so far and healed so much in the years since the last time these thoughts had circled like vultures, waiting for me to break, to fall, to give up. Waiting for me to focus on all the bad, what I have been through, how hard some was (and still is) to deal with - instead of focusing on how much I have survived, how strong my instinct is to heal myself, how far I have come to get to where I am and how much I long to find a place of peace and rest. (Hint: the place of peace and rest isn't a destination. It is within each of us and needs only to be acknowledged and leaned into. It has nothing to do with anything happening outside of us or inside of us. Like happiness, peace and rest (just being) is a choice we can make regardless of what is happening in our lives. It is a state of mind, a state of being, a conscious choice. I find peace amidst chaos by finding quietness - a quiet place in myself where I say only positive things to myself (often about myself), where I find calm, relaxation among tense moments. I can go here anytime, anywhere. And, with practice, I often curl up in this place in my mind while facing difficult people or scenarios.)
In an effort to be completely honest, here is a brief history of what I was/am healing from:
A childhood (aren't we all? ha ha!)
Mine was fairly normal for the first 12 years or so. And then the cult happened. (<--- This statement in no way is meant to be disparaging of my parents. I understand (as a parent) that we all do the best we can with the tools we have. Regardless of good intentions, I have deep scars and some open wounds left from my childhood - pre, during and post cult days.)
A teenage marriage and teenage parenthood
Mostly thanks to the cult and religious teachings that allotted really no other alternatives for girls in terms of education, higher learning, careers. As I was the oldest girl in a large family, I spent a majority of my childhood parenting my younger siblings. Then became a parent myself at 18. Once out of my parents home, I was finding it so difficult to navigate how I was feeling, what I believed and how I was now supposed to live. Then 3 back-to-back pregnancies. It was too much. I was mentally, physically and emotionally depleted and completely exhausted.
A marriage gone bad
After 7 years of fumbling our way through, we had both mucked it up pretty good. There was an affair and a divorce and so many choices to make. I am unabashedly proud of the way I handled everything and the choices I made to not be bitter, to choose to see my responsibility in the dissolution of our relationship, to choose the pain and looking at the ugly over any kind of bandaid, 'quick fix' or the angry way out. I know beyond a doubt that it is the only reason I am what I am right now. Although I so wish these lessons could have been learned any other way, I can look back and see that the raw pain I felt forced me to deal with myself differently than anything softer would have. I grew, changed and was redone in ways that nothing less painful would have achieved.
A remarriage
Yeah. That happened. Long journey, long story.
A parenting journey that has been riddled with guilt
Spending years stuck in patterns that I never wanted to repeat but didn't know how to get out of. But, knowing there was a better way out there was enough to lead to immense guilt at the way I would respond, punish and, in all honesty, lose my shit on a regular basis. And that better way that was "out there"? Yeah. It was within me all along. I just needed to tap into myself and listen to my instincts. And listen to my babies. And trust myself. And trust my babies. And stop all the mental noise ("But, if I don't spank them they'll be BRATS!!!!" "But, if they aren't conditioned to obey (albeit, out of fear) who knows what will happen to them?!"), and just be. . . and listen. And trust. And hug. And hold. And love. And accept. And empower. And hear. And respect.
Ah. The years I spent trying to manufacture parenting in myself, instead of just trusting myself and being the parent I felt inside. It still brings tears.
But, now I know.
I journey forward in hope. Without fear of seeing myself as I really am. With awareness. Made better by what was, and knowing what will be - if I am brave enough to let it happen.
(Last summer also brought the conclusion of an unfortunate situation with a family member that was unavoidable, stressful, frustrating and nearly outside of my control. As a soul that really tries to avoid confrontation, it was nearly crippling to have family members, some people I considered friends and complete strangers approaching me about a private matter and then proceed to tell me it was all my fault and I needed to fix it. And how, if I just groveled and took sole responsibility for someone else and their actions, I could still restore "family relations" and "harmony". I felt such weight on my shoulders. I could be authentic in myself and to what I knew to be the truth of the situation (which looked like it would divide the family - but only if they were so immature as to let it), or I could fake my way back into a "relationship" with someone that was completely untrustworthy and hope that my groveling would be enough to restore what they had broken. I chose the truth. I chose to stand in my own power and not feel responsible for what other people would say, do or feel.)
I spent years putting bandaids on my wounds. Not knowing how to heal them. Not having energy to face them. But life has a way of bringing situations to you that force you to look at what is under the bandaids. If you can't change yourself, who can? If you won't heal yourself, who will?
As my bandaids were forcibly removed by circumstances largely out of my control, I tried to manage and juggle so many things coming to a head all at once. A very wise sister of mine told me to be proud of what I was going through. She said if all of this was coming up it must mean that I was at a place in my life of being able to deal with it. It had been lying under the surface, waiting to be dealt with, awaiting healing. Now I was ready. Now I was finally at a stable place to be able to face them. Again. In a healthy way. As a stronger person.
Last summer, as I started facing myself in a whole new way, things started coming into my life. People started coming into my life. Things and people that scared me. People, bringing opportunities with them that I could not say 'no' to. Situations that I feel compelled to embrace. I am finding that the more I say 'yes' to healing, the more of myself I am not afraid to face, the more opportunities I am presented with to grow and learn from. Here is a secret: I am so unbelievably terrified and yet strangely excited by all of these scenarios. I look at them and see ways that I will be stretched and taken out of my comfort zone, but ways that my life can be enriched and filled, beyond anything I ever thought possible. Beyond anything I could have ever done as a broken, fearful, wounded soul that was still so stuck in my head.
When we say 'yes' to healing and growing and all the scary stuff that we may have to face in that, life brings us really cool shit! When we deal with our shit, when we stand in our power, people and circumstances we never imagined start to trickle in to fill that space. The space that was previously full of decay can be healed and filled with new life. The space that was cluttered with wounds and scars can be mended and filled with beauty.
I don't know how to describe what is happening. I find myself laughing when my inbox is full of messages from people searching for their own healing, on one level or another. Or requests for me to participate in something. Meet with someone and discuss viewpoints. Speak in a class. My first thought is "Why? Who the hell am I? Sure I can come sit in your class, but you have nothing to learn from me. Seriously." And then this quiet voice inside of me (most likely from my inner place of peace) says, "If not you, then who? Why not you?" Usually the only answer I have is 'because it scares me'. Well, life can be scary. Am I going to hide away or embrace what comes in?
To sum up all of my ramblings here, a story.
When I was a child there was a situation that happened that caused deep trauma, distrust of those I was supposed to be able to trust implicitly, fear and so, so many questions. It has touched so many areas of my life on nearly every level. It was a defining moment in my life. It changed me. It continues to. It was buried and ignored for many years, out of necessity. But it was never far from my thoughts and I was aware of how it shaped my behaviours. I started picking away at the layers some years ago. Determined to face it, acknowledge it, pull it open and then heal it. I had known for a long time that I would be facing this one on my own, feeling unable to confront those responsible and seek closure. I'd made remarkable progress in facing it and had developed a small crew of loved ones who challenged me, comforted me and encouraged me to continue looking at it, even though painful. Always there to hold my hand, wipe my tears, not flinch away from my anger. To these people I will forever be grateful.
Recently one of the people involved approached me. (And I am sorry to be so vague here. A day will come I am sure when I will disclose all, but not today. Not now.) This person, for the first time ever, spoke openly to me about the situation. Offered an apology for their part in it. And spoke very honestly about the details. Allowing full disclosure and the first opportunity for me to speak about it in 20 years.
I was blown away and amazed!
And then I felt very curious. Why do things work like this? To some, it would seem that this apology was 20 years too late. To me, it felt like absolute perfect timing. I don't know that I would have been ready for it any earlier. The wound was still so raw, and covered with so many bandaids. I think if it had come any earlier I would have had only been able to respond with anger.
Closure came when I knew I could heal myself and go on without it.
When we are ready, life has a way of bringing us exactly what we need. Not a moment before. Always perfection. Even if what we need is an awareness that we don't need anything at all. That we have the ability to heal ourselves and that, within us, lies all of our answers, all that we seek, all the wholeness that we desire.
So, dear reader. Be honest. Be brave. Acknowledge your wounds. Be prepared and willing to remove bandaids and peer into your own depths. And know, beyond anything, that you have the ability to heal yourself. To be well. To be whole.
Then watch for the unimaginable ways that life will use you and your story.

When You Ask, Life Delivers
This week has completely kicked my ass! And it is only Thursday!
I am excited, though. As I become more aware of my behaviours
(reactions and responses, if you will), I become more aware of the
thoughts behind them. Every behaviour I have
originates as a thought. I, and I alone, can control those! There is
huge freedom in that! I feel like I've traveled a billion emotional
miles this week already. But I am looking back and seeing what I
learned and how I grew. With no feelings of guilt and failure.
I had an incredibly emotional conversation with a very difficult person and wanted to dissolve afterwards. But I looked at those feelings, found their originating thought, and felt a sense of safety, security and peace return. I completely EFFED up parenting, had a very honest discussion afterwards, followed my instincts instead of my anger, and watched a very stubborn offspring completely soften before my eyes. We both were able to walk away with no resentment or animosity. Had a great conversation with a dear friend where I was able to pinpoint the source of MONTHS of stress and frustration. Guess what? It was me. I handled a bad bike accident where my man-child broke a tooth and banged himself up pretty good. I wanted to revert to a comatose state and be angry that I am single parenting right now. Found that thought, managed it, found resolve - with only a little frustration that the man-child's absolutely perfect teeth will never be that way again. *sigh* There is more, but I will spare you ALL the details. Ha! ;p
Knowing what I've put out there and am asking of myself, seeing the opportunities as they regularly present themselves, not fearing or being angry that I am given chances to manifest change in my own life - it is truly a very beautiful thing.
(This was a post I did on Facebook last week. Thought I would post it here, too. And am trying to make a mental switch to blogging here, instead of on Facebook. There. Now I've put it out there.)

Going with the Flow
So, it's been a while. Only - what? A year? More? Psh. I don't even know.
Life, eh?
(I checked. It's been almost exactly a year. Okay, okay! It's been 2, dammit!)
Quick update on "This One's for the Girls" post from March 2011:
Am currently going through a menstrual cycle using the new menstrual cup called Femmy Cycle. IT. IS. AWESOME. Right from the start had no issues with it, as I did continuously with the Diva Cup. Hmmm, the Diva Cup not the gold standard of menstrual cups? Surprise, surprise. Not a one-cup-for-every-girl world, but a menstrual-cups-for-every-girl world.
I did some pretty extensive work on my pelvic floor after fiddling around with the Diva Cup for over a year. It was an amazing, necessary, affirming, comforting, fascinating and useful education! Lauren Campbell at LifeMark Physiotherapy in London, ON is the best physiotherapist! Since I've never been to any other physios she gets to hold this distinction. ;) She was patient and always took time to answer all my questions and correct my viewpoint. (Doing the Tupler Techique to heal my diastasis recti had given me a very inaccurate mindset toward my abdominal muscles, how to heal them and the treatment they need.) One of my goals going to see her was to be able to use the Diva Cup. After 4 months of seeing her on a weekly basis, I had restored so much health, tone and strength to my pelvic floor but still could not get the Diva Cup to work for me. It was very disappointing. I started reading some reviews and some other blogs about menstrual cupping and finally came to the conclusion that - duh! - the Diva Cup did not have to be the only cup I ever tried. Why was I setting such narrow parameters on myself?! *sigh*
So, I began doing even more research into a subject that I thought I had already covered. That is when I found the recently released Femmy Cycle. A menstrual cup with a relatively different design than all others. I figured if one style didn't work for me, why try to replace it with a similar style by a different name? Why not go in a different direction and maybe work my way back?
I ordered it from the company, it shipped directly to my house in less than 2 weeks. The kit comes with 2 cups in it, under $40! Um, thrilled much?! I think so!
I got the package a couple of weeks and and it has been floating around my bathroom counter until I finally put it in "my drawer". I thought several times about playing around with one and testing it out before my March cycle started. But I didn't. I think I was nervous that if this cup didn't work where would I go next? What would I use? I don't mind the Jade & Pearl Sea Sponge Tampons, but I'd like to have something a little more convenient. I was also afraid. Yup. I need to go there. I was afraid that if this cup didn't work it meant that my pelvic floor (aka, vagina in this instance) was somehow defective. Messed up beyond repair. Shot from childbirth. Done. Broken.
And, as a woman, a sexual partner, an educated Doula, I know that is not true!
In my excitement about finding a reusable cup that seems to be working for me, I may or may not have innocently beckoned my unsuspecting husband into the bathroom to tell him it was working and how much I was loving it before I had rinsed the cup out. (NOTE: although I am loving the Femmy Cycle cup, they are not invisible! And, when being used for certain aspects of the menstrual cycle, they have a certain look to them. ;P) Astonishingly, my husband survived this completely hypothetical scenario. Ha ha!
I did experience a bit of leaking the first night that I used it. But in hindsight, I believe my bladder was quite full and was helping to accomplish that. We'll see how the next few days go, and I'll try to do another post with all of my findings and feelings.
Yay for menstrual cups! Yay for easy cycles! Yay for saving the environment, one small step at a time!

Days Lost
I
am
spending
so
many
days
feeling
guilty
for
who
I've
been
in
the
past
that
I
am
missing
out
on
days
slipping
by
right
now.
I
am
cashing
in
my
future,
and
that
of
my
most
loved
ones,
for
the
emptiness
of
what
has
been
done,
ended,
over.
(I just had to put that in writing to remind myself how utterly ridiculous it is for me to continue with this behaviour.)

Nourishing my brain cells = Feeding my passions
Here's what I've been keeping myself busy with lately:

This One's For the Girls...
Dear Girls,
Period.
Menstruation.
Moon cycle.
Monthly flow.
(And then there's all the awful ones - like referring to it as a being. "Aunt Flow", "Monthly Friend"... Ew!)
What do you use? What works? What have you tried? What will you give your daughter/s when their bodies answer the call of Nature and become women?
I started when I was 12 and used god-awful pads for years! Gah! They're big, clumsy, messy, feel like diapers and can we just say leakage????????? Is this the best I'll have to offer my daughter? She is 11, btw, so her time is coming - way sooner than I'd like! So, I've recently started searching for alternative products to use. Alternative to pads & tampons.
I'll admit, although I am an avid recycling/reusing freak I fall back to tampons. (I know, I know. I am cringing at myself right now!) I have tried the Diva Cup, but, after 3 good sized babies, my pelvic floor needs some - ahem - 'personal' training. So that is being taken care of! *wink* Because of weakened muscles I cannot get the cup to stay in place. I'm not giving up on it yet!
I recently got a package of 'Instead'. These are a menstrual cup that can be reusable. They seem very prone to leaking, as there is not suction involved. They are supposed to be inserted to your cervix, down under the rim of the cervix and 'hook' around the back to stay in place. If you're like me, trying to picture when it is to the cervix, when it is around the cervix & actually in place is like blindly trying to find your way out of a maze! Possibly leading other blind people! Also being coached by blind people! Yeah. You get the point! How am I supposed to tell? I know when it isn't around the cervix, because it shifts & leaks! I've watched several videos on youtube giving very descriptive directions on how to insert, feel when it's in place & 'retrieve' it to empty. I'm sorry but a 'bulge' in a glass tube does NOT tell me where my very own cervix is & how to tell when the cup is near it/under it/around it correctly!
So, to sum up... Research still under way! he he he
The benefits of finding & using feminine products that are reusable is massive! Bottom line, it means each one of us girls is putting little-to-no waste into the environment each month. And passing that consciousness on to our daughters... Massiveness amplified!
Here's why we need to be aware of tossing what may seem like "little", "harmless" products into traditional waste removal systems:
http://www.ecomall.com/greenshopping/dc.htm
80 million women (in 2007) potentially using disposable products. *gulp*
With an approximate 41 year span of menstruating it is about high time that we women start demanding products that work, that aren't harmful to our bodies or the environment.
I've asked the wise women, that I'm wise enough to surround myself with!, to point me in any direction that they know of!
Here is what I've come across so far:
http://menstrualcupinfo.wordpress.com/lunette-review/
(This site is run by a woman who personally tries different menstrual cups & such and then blogs about her experience. She sells them, too. I'm still weeding my way through all her reviews & personal story!)
http://menstrualcups.friendhood.net/
(This is a discussion site to get/give pointers, tips, advice on all things menstruation & products. I made a screen name today & still have to get on & find my way through the vast amount of threads & info! Whew!)
As women we owe our Mother Earth the respect of finding ways to not have our Moon Blood poison her, clutter her! Our cycles ebb & flow with the natural rhythms of the Earth. Enabling us to procreate, bring new life onto this Planet. I wish to honour her with these rhythms and, having brought forth daughters, I wish to teach them to honour her in the same way.
Girls, we are at least 80 million strong! With those numbers, if enough of us turn from what's become mainstream & traditional, we can force manufacturers to put some time/energy/funding behind making & marketing reliable alternatives! Let's hear it for the girls! *wink*

*wink*

The "Perfect" Woman
Another cut & paste. I am not talented enough to blog in two places at once! ;-)
The idea of perfection has been weighing heavily on my mind lately. We women are such harsh critics when it comes to ourselves (inner & outer) and what we consider 'perfect'. Why is this? Why do we judge our bodies based on what someone else has decided is the perfect form? Why do we deny our exquisite uniqueness in favour of fitting into a societal mold for womankind?
The pursuit of perfection often comes with a lot of expectations. Expectations placed on ourselves, by those around us, by society. Expectations about how we look, behave, our parenting, our lifestyle. Often we feel a duty to shoulder these responsibilities and stay strong under the crushing pressure.
What if we could step back and take a breather? Learn to accept our bodies and selves for what and who it truly is? Learn to view ourselves from a relaxed vantage point instead of racing to force ourselves into someone's ideals. Learn to love ourselves - right where we are, just how we are.
Where would this monumental shift in womankind take the world? I've had a blog about perfection & the true cost to women brewing for a while now. I started writing it on here & didn't like the way it was looking. So I saved it to a file, thinking I'd come back to it later. It kept staring at me - making me feel less than perect for not finishing it faster! LOL So I deleted it. BUT! This subject is continually coming up in my life, reading, blogs I follow, women I talk to. So I am listening! I am re-opening that file that's haunting me!
This is something I came across today. So powerful I cannot ignore it's presence or the ripple it started in my heart! It's from a website called www.theshapeofamother.com. It's a woman's (Rosie) comment to someone else's pic or comment. The fab woman who runs the website loved it so much she reposted it on facebook. I never would have seen it otherwise! (You see now why I'm really starting to feel haunted by this subject????????
Here are Rosie's comments (copied & pasted):

Hear them - really hear them. And then honestly ask yourself what kind of a lens you see through to judge your body & inner self. And then honestly answer yourself! Who's expectations are you trying to live up to? Your own? Society's? Your partner's? Other women's? There is so much complex emotion to how we view ourselves!
It's no wonder men are so terrified of the question "do I look fat in this?"!!!!!! They are (sometimes - he he he) smarter than we give them credit for! They realize that it's a completely loaded question! Because it totally is! The pants, the dress, the top - all just the excuse to ask if we're fat. If he's judging our appearance as we are. If we meet his expectations. If he'll be embarrassed to be seen publicly with us. If he notices the bulges or rolls that we do. If he's proud that you'll be on his arm!
It's a sly way for our insecurity to reassure itself that you aren't really as bad as you think you are, don't look as bad as you feel, shouldn't judge yourself as harshly as you are... I realize that I don't ask hubby this question anymore. And that realization came with the terror that it's because I answer it in my head now! Yikes! My inner judgment is much harsher than he would ever be!
It's a cycle I'm stuck in - and have been for pretty much my whole womanhood. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
I'm on a journey to help myself lighten up on - well, myself. To figure out where my judgments of myself come from, where formed. Whose opinion am I using? Who's definition of perfect am I living by? When I'm on these journeys I tend to drag along all the women in my life!
Welcome to that club! LOL!
I hope you're ready for this because I am listening to the Universe now!
